The purpose of the Mental Health First Aid course is to provide learners with an understanding and awareness of mental health and common mental health disorders and issues. The course helps to reduce stigma and discrimination and encourages people to talk about mental health. Furthermore, the qualification should provide learners with the ability to apply their knowledge of mental health through recognising and responding to the signs of mental ill health in themselves and others, and be able to offer mental health first aid to people experiencing mental ill health.

With one in every four people experiencing a mental health problem at some point in their lives, a greater awareness of mental health issues and an understanding of how to manage our mental health is required.

This course is a blend of online and classroom learning.

On completion of the 1 day course and e-learning module you will be able to:

  • Define mental health and describe the mental health continuum
  • Identify common misconceptions surrounding mental health and describe the role of the media in the portrayal of mental health
  • Identify the main signs and symptoms of common mental health disorders and mental health problems including depression, anxiety disorders, eating disorders and addiction amongst others
  • Understand the support and advice available for mental ill health
  • Recognise and respond to the signs of mental ill health in themselves and others

In addition to helping others, this qualification will provide you with a broad understanding of ways to manage and improve your own mental health and how to offer mental health first aid.

Entry Requirements
Anyone over the age of 16 is eligible to book onto the course. There are no entry requirements - any learner that wishes to improve their knowledge and awareness of mental health and mental health first aid is welcome.

You will be supported throughout the course by your dedicated educational supervisor.

In this module you will improve your knowledge and understanding of mental health and learn how to change attitudes and encourage people to talk about mental health to remove social stigma.

In this module you will gain the basic tools to help someone who is developing a mental health issue, experiencing mental health problems or is in a sudden mental health crisis.
