Whether you are qualified in exercise-referral or not, this module covers everything, starting at the basics and then going into depth, well beyond exercise-referral, looking at the research.

You will not find a more in-depth course in hypertension and exercise aimed at fitness professionals. Our course has been taken by medical students, fitness professionals, physios, nurses and those just interested in exercise as a form of medicine.

This online course is 3 hours long and covers the following learning objectives.

By the end of this module, students should be able to:

  • Explain how blood pressure is regulated ( You will be taught the physiology in depth)
  • Explain how blood pressure is assessed
  • Explain how blood pressure is treated and the guidelines doctor's use
  • Recognise the key medication and their side effects
  • Recognise when doctors will use different antihypertensive medications
  • Recognise the body of evidence (research) that underpins exercise prescription for hypertension
  • Create an exercise programme for a client with high blood pressure

Entry Requirements
There are no specific entry requirements for this course. Students have come from a range of backgrounds from health care professionals and students, exercise referral students, personal trainers and those interested in learning more about hypertension.

You will be supported throughout the course by your dedicated educational supervisor. Your tutor will be a medical doctor who is also an experienced fitness professionals.

The course contains a mixture of video lectures, articles and research papers. There are 4 key modules.

In this short module we discuss how to get the most out of the course and what you need to do!

Here you will learn about what high blood pressure is, how it develops and what its affects are on the body. We look in depth at the physiological processes that occur in the body.

Here we look at how blood pressure is assessed, the investigations and tests that need to be carried out and then the treatment. We discuss pharmacological (drugs) treatment, as well as lifestyle.

Here we take a look at research around exercise and high blood pressure to understand what really happens and current theories.

The final assessment is an online multiple choice assessment. You will need 80% to pass the course. You may take this assessment as many times as you need.

This CPD course will give you an overview of the origins of Strength and Conditioning and how to incorporate Strength and Conditioning into programmes to help clients recover from injury.

At the end of the course you will receive a certificate, signed by Nick Grantham, as evidence of your CPD.

Muscle Physiology


Tutor, Jordan Curry, has an MSc in Clinical Exercise Physiology and a BSc in Sport and Exercise Science and teaches at College and University level.

This CPD course will give you an overview of muscle physiology. By the end of the course you will be able to understand the structure of skeletal muscle; understand the process of the proposed sliding filament theory, the structure of a sarcomere and why calcium is vital in skeletal muscle contraction; understand the types of adaptations that can occur in skeletal muscle due to chronic exercise; and understand the responses that can occur to skeletal muscle due to acute exercise.

At the end of the course you will receive access to a certificate which you can download and print as evidence of your CPD.
